High-Waisted Denim: 5 Tips on How To

Let’s not [high] waist anytime and just jump into this weeks How To… HIGH-WAISTED DENIM…

So, you are afraid of the CT (camel toe) and therefore you won’t wear high-rise/high-waisted denim.  You think you are too short and it makes your body look too stubby.  Your hips don’t lie and so you don’t want to accentuate that part of your body.  At one point your mother wore high-waisted denim and you can’t get that mental image out of your mind.  Any other excuse ________________ (fill in the blank)..

Aaaaannnnndddd… stop.  Stop right there and reconsider this trend.  Hear me out.  It took me a long time to come around to high-waisted denim.  For many of the reasons I listed above I was reluctant and hesitant to embrace and wear this trend.  However, over the last couple of weeks I have been LOVEING all my high-waisted denim.  While I keep it simple and basic I wanted to share five ways to style high-waisted denim.

Below are 5 easy tips to style your favorite high-waisted denim.  As you will see some of the inspirational photos many (or all) of the tips in one look.  Oh, and leave me a comment at the end with your thoughts on this new post format.   I’m hoping this additional format option exposes you to yet another way to be inspired with your own style.  And, honestly, I want to push you to be more confident and take a few risks in your style.

high-waisted denim tips

tip one: pair with an oversized sweater/top

I love this look and how the over-sized top balances out the bottom half.  Pairing your denim with an over-sized sweater/top is one of the easiest ways to wear your high-wasited denim.  It is comfortable and casual.  It creates harmony with a slimmer bottom but keeps the look trendy and young (elevating your fear of looking like your mother in the 80’s).

tip two: add a belt

Recently I have been living in belts. They really create a polished and mature look that is perfect for a working professional or stay-at-home mama.  Adding a belt to your high-wasited denim keeps the look streamlined, sleek and complete.  there are so many belt options and styles out there you can’t really go wrong. Whether thick or thin, printed or plain, leather or fabric adding a belt is the perfect way to complete your high-waisted look.  Wear this polished outfit for a lunch meeting, casual Friday in the office or a weekday date night.

tip three; add a jacket/blazer

Not only is this practical for the changing weather but adding a jacket to your high-waisted  denim helps eliminate some of the fears of accentuating your wider-hips. When you add a jacket, especially a longer one, it elongates your look.  It takes the perceived emphasis off your wider section and draws the eye down along your body, elongating it.  Additionally,  high- wasited denim inherently creates an elongated slimmer look by not cutting you off at your widest point.  Throw on a jacket/blazer to your favorite denim to showcase your perfect body.

tip four: tuck it in

Just like the last tip spoke about this one helps defy the idea that high-waisted accentuates wider hips or shortness.  In fact, tucking your shirt in does the exact opposite; it creates a long lean appearance as it keeps the look streamlined and sleek.  The high-waisted nature immediately draws your eye up and when you keep the shirt tucked in it continues to draw the eye up.  Personally, I love the look of a collared button down or simple v-neck tee best.  Perfect look for any occasion!

tip five: knotted tee/half tuck

This tip is good for those who already love the high-waisted trend as it really highlights the high nature of the denim.  Adding a fun knotted tee or half tuck keeps your look fresh, young and trendy.  The knotted tee trend is pretty hot right now and adding it to your favorite high-waited denim keeps the look on point.

I LOVE this new format. There are so many styles that I love but think “I have no idea how to wear that” or “that looks so good on her but I could never pull that off”. This format really makes me feel like I can try some new things, and how to pair them with things I already have! This 5’3″ mama was convinced that there is no way I should be trying on high-waisted jeans, but I think I will the next time I eye a cute pair.
